The Attributes You Need as a Leader

Last week I talked about how Public Speaking was a form of Leadership. When you are speaking to a group you are attempting to motivate, influence, and inspire them. I indicated that every effective presentation/speech must have a goal or a point. You want to move your audience in some manner or another.

The thought that I want to share with you this week is who do you need to be to be an effective leader?

If speaking is a form of leading and a leader needs certain attributes in order to be effective then you as a speaker need those attributes as well.. What are those attributes? They are competence, integrity and enthusiasm. To leadership these three attributes are like the legs of a three legged stool. All of them are required. If any one of them is missing the attempt at leadership will collapse.

Think about each of those attributes as if you were an audience member. Are you going to be inspired by someone who is clearly incompetent and does not know what s/he is talking about? What about someone who you suspect has a hidden agenda and is possibly manipulating you for his/her own gain? What about someone who has so little enthusiasm (or appropriate motivation) that s/he can not even motivate her/himself?

Anyone who attempts to motivate you with any of these attributes is going to fail regardless of whether s/he chooses to communicate in a written form or verbal (public speaking) form. If you are not going to be motivated by someone lacking any of these attributes neither is your audience. Make sure that you have competence, integrity, and enthusiasm when you prepare for your presentation.
